Sarah Gold: As a young progressive, I would be remiss if I did not support CalSERVE candidates
April 5th, 2008
UC Berkeley student and Cal Dems President* Sarah Gold sent us the following e-mail today, endorsing Andy Kelley for Senate and the entire CalSERVE Executive Slate:
“As a young progressive organizer and dedicated Democrat, I would be remiss if I did not support the CalSERVE candidates for the ASUC. The values that have propelled the party from its founding in 1984 are the same that underwrite the Democratic party: a commitment to equality, justice, and civil rights.
“Students who opine that the ASUC should not concern itself with state and national politics are dangerously short-sighted, for, as a public institution, we are dramatically and directly affected by the political morays of our government.
“It is with these values and beliefs in mind that I chose to endorse Andy Kelley for senate. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone in my years at Cal with a stronger commitment to fighting for students’ rights than Andy; his work with UC Students Association and Tuition Relief Now has demonstrated his unwavering dedication to empowering students and keeping education affordable and accessible for everyone. He’s the kind of passionate progressive that I want to see leading my student government, which is precisely why I have also endorsed the entire CalSERVE executive slate.
“I know that Roxanne, Dionne, Krystle, and Carlo will uphold the progressive ideals of both CalSERVE and the Democratic party in leading our student government. It is their leadership that I believe will be the best to promote and fight for the values that we, as students, believe in.”
