CAMPUS SAFETY

Hate crimes are on the rise across UCs, as was evident with the “Compton Cookout” and the incidents that followed it. I will lobby for a system of accountability within UCPD specific to hate crimes and make sure that hate crimes are taken more seriously so that they are dealt with appropriately. I will increase awareness of the Owl Shuttle service and Bear Walk and work with the bus and BART agencies to increase services in the evening and will lobby the Berkeley City Council for more street lighting beyond Telegraph and Dwight.

INCREASING ACCOUNTABILITY

Many students don’t know the power and influence of the ASUC. The Auxiliary and the university are making decisions that decrease the autonomy of the ASUC. Small and local business woners have been forced out after non-transparent processes, and negotiations with Subway have begun despite student opposition. I will increase student involvement in Store Operations Board meetings by publicizing them more broadly. I will also inform more students about decisions concerning the ASUC’s finances and financial operations, and put pressure on the Auxiliary to uphold decisions that students support.

INCREASING FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO MAINTAIN
DIVERSITY

The number of students of color has been on the decline, especially since the passage of Proposition 209. Student organizations have also been losing funding as a result of budget cuts. As an ASUC Senator I will look for funds to help increase financial aid for low income students and funding for student organizations. I will hold the university accountable by lobbying them to increase funding for the student organizations that do their work (recruitment and retention) without being appropriately compensated.
