IMPROVING STUDENT SAFETY ON AND OFF CAMPUS

As students become increasing alarmed about their safety in light of recent violent and sexual attacks, we cannot ignore this pertinent issue. As senator, I will work towards increasing campus and street lighting with energy efficient light bulbs to ensure that students are safe walking off campus at night. I will also push towards expanding the patrolling areas of which the UCPD overseas, as well as urging students to join the WarnMe emergency notification system.

PROMOTING DISABILITY AWARENESS

As one of the co-facilitators for Cal’s wheelchair basketball decal, I have greatly valued events which bring all kinds of individuals together into one space. I have learned that a disability does not lie within the individual themselves, but within society’s own inability to construct a community with equal access and opportunity for all. I will towards achieving a more inclusive environment for people with disabilities through sports, recreation programs, and community events.

INCREASING ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

The 2009 UC Berkley Sustainability Report indicates that campus waste going to the landfill has dropped by 1% since last year and has decreased by 8% since 1990. These facts demonstrate that environmental accomplishments have already been made. As a leading public institution, we must continue to strive for progress through efficient and effective methods. I want to make Berkeley even more environmentally sustainable through providing the option of online text books in more classes and a textbook rental program, which will greatly reduce student costs and the university’s paper consumption. I will work towards protecting and preserving Strawberry Creek as a place of learning, research, recreation, and relaxation for all members of the community.
