Environmental Justice Advocacy
There is not enough awareness of environmental justice. Many communities right in the Bay Area, specifically in many areas of low income, and of people of color in the US, suffer from racial/ class discriminatory environmental disparate impacts. We as Cal students can unite to be at the forefront of this fight. By working with other senators and environmental justice student groups, we can raise awareness and educate everyone to become advocates for social change on and off campus. Fight for those who don’t have a voice.
Get Outside the Library, From the Books to the Community
There is a lack of opportunities for students to engage in the community and be involved in service projects. Programs like Stiles Hall and Cal Corps are at risk of limited funding. AC courses (which are the only courses that tend to have an engagement piece) are often viewed as a burden. Having hands-on experience is vital in supplementing our studies. Working to promote more of these programs and volunteer groups and allocating funds to more service oriented groups will engage more students to connect with the community.
Getting the Job
As the job market continues to dwindle for graduates and becomes more difficult to secure jobs right out of Cal, students have to ensure that their academic performance/ professional development shine. As a peer advisor, knowing what resources are available to students is key to ensuring that they can be competitive job candidates. But services like the SLC/ Career Center continue to be at risk with budget cuts. I want to ensure services are protected by through funding and continue to have the support of the ASUC.
