Challenging The Model Minority Myth
Last fall, the Regents released a report that they would increase diversity on campus by admitting more non-Asian students. However, the “Asian” label does not do justice to the diversity of communities that are represented under that term. As Senator, I will work to peel off the “model minority” myth by making sure that the institution recognizes the diverse backgrounds of people grouped under the Asian-American term.
A Safe Space For All
Every year, student organizations’ efforts to put on events are threatened by demands for student organizations to pay “insurance” in case of an accident. As an ASUC Senator, I will work with the Center for Campus Life and Leadership and Risk Management to hold the UC responsible for providing its students a reasonable and affordable insurance plan that won’t hamper student organizations.
The Power Of Students
Students have the power to transform our institutions into vehicles for change. As Senator, I will reach out to various students groups to make sure that we all use each other and the ASUC as a resource. I will also make sure the ASUC is accessible to student groups by allowing greater discretion on the way they are allowed to spend their funding.
